The project “New Marketing Areas of Wild Taiga” was implemented by the Association “Idän Taiga ry", representing about 60 tourism and nature tourism entrepreneurs and cultural operators in the Kuhmo and Suomussalmi region. The members of the association represent a comprehensive range of tourist offerings in the area. All these operators are involved with the region's key attractions – nature and culture – and make use of them in tourism business. The project was mainly aimed at new market areas for the Wild Taiga operators, i.e. Asia (especially China, Japan and South Korea) and Eastern Central Europe (especially Poland and Czech Republic).
In the project plan, consumers, tour operators and media were specified as the primary target groups of the project in Europe and Eastern Europe in particular. Accordingly, in Asia, the primary target groups of the project were tour operators in China, Japan and South Korea, as well as international incoming travel bureaus, organising tours from Asia to Europe.
KEY GOALS
The key goals of the project included the number of companies involved in the project measures (at least 26), positive development of overnight stays and company revenues, and overall increase of international travel income in Kainuu region.
CONCRETE MEASURES
The goals, set for the project, were sought through the following concrete measures: (1) participation in international sales events (mapping of tour operator contacts), (2) visits of tour operators in Kainuu, (3) development and tailoring of new products to the target market, (4) preparation and production of international marketing and sales material, (5) electronic marketing, international marketing campaigns, and (6) organizing visits of media representatives to Kainuu, in support of tour operators' sales.
RESULTS
The main objective of the project was that at least 26 of the Wild Taiga companies participating in the project would launch new or significantly improved products on the named international markets. The number of companies went up to thirty (30), and thus the target was exceeded by four (4) companies.
The second goal of the project was to increase the number of overnight stays of foreign tourists, and the number of people visiting wildlife observation hides from the NEW MARKET AREAS (China, Japan, South Korea, Poland and Czech Republic). This goal was achieved. From the very low figures of 2014, the number of overnight stays rose up to some 1,700 by the end of August 2017.
Another objective of the project was to gain growth in the number of registered nights spent by ALL FOREIGN tourists in Kainuu. During the project’s running time, it became clear that a very significant amount of nights spent by foreign visitors were excluded in the registrations made by Statistics Finland, and therefore it was considered necessary also to include the NON-REGISTERED OVERNIGHT STAYS in the project results. The number and development of non-registered overnight stays was mapped by a company survey, and the information on officially registered overnight stays was retrieved from the statistics of Statistics Finland.
The objective of significant growth of nights spent by foreign tourists was achieved. By the end of September 2017, the already fulfilled reservations, and existing reservations for the rest of the year suggest an estimated 18,000 nights spent by foreign tourists in Kainuu region. If the estimate of 18,000 overnight stays is achieved, the number of registered nights spent in Wild Taiga companies from 2014 to the year 2017 will increase by about 22 per cent
(+ 3,200 days). According to the results of the company survey, the increase of non-registered nights spent by foreign tourists in Wild Taiga companies from 2014 to 2017 is about 30 per cent (+3,300).
The aim of the project was also to increase the revenue from international tourism in Kainuu by at least 2 million euros. The impact of the project on Kainuu's tourism income was assessed by the number of nights spent by foreign tourists in the region. It is estimated that in 2014, the number of nights spent by foreign tourists in the Wild Taiga region (registered + non-registered) was about 15,500, and in 2017, the figure has gone up to 28,000. Thus, the growth from 2014 to the year 2017 is about 12,500 overnight stays. Foreign tourists are estimated to spend about 200-300 euros per day on their trip to Kainuu. Based on these figures, Kainuu's tourism revenue is estimated to have grown by 2.5 to 3.7 million euros.
FEEDBACK
In the overall assessment and rating of the project, the Board of the Association “Idän Taiga ry.” found its results praiseworthy: the number of foreign tourists has increased, tourist businesses have grown, the companies have established new international tour operator contacts to further their business growth, and the project has gained considerable visibility in international media. The project has laid firm groundwork towards opening markets to Eastern Europe.
According to the feedback from the companies involved in the project, the project influenced, changed and developed international operations of the participating organizations and companies. Collaboration between various operators was intensified, and the project enhanced their knowledge of new target markets, operators, operating models, such as webinars, and brought along new contacts and additional sales.
Wild Taiga product and marketing materials became a winner of the “Chinese Tourist Welcome Awards" award in the marketing category, granted by COTRI – China Outbound Tourism Research Institute, at the Beijing professional travel fair in 2015. European Best Destinations consumer website chose Wild Taiga as one of the most appealing destinations in Europe for the year 2017 in a worldwide consumer vote.
We don’t have access to consumers' assessments on the project, but the project has received very good feedback from tour operators and the media (regarding pre-tours, press trips and webinars).
FURTHER USE OF THE RESULTS AND EXPERIENCE
The Association “Idän Taiga ry” will continue to organise webinars, which were introduced during the project.
Based on the gained experience, the Wild Taiga operators will focus in the future on the European markets, and, in part of the far-off regions, to so-called old markets, which are better suited to the core competencies and product offering of Wild Taiga. Some entrepreneurs also found trading process, bidding and revising the visiting programmes for the Chinese tour operators particularly toilsome and time-consuming compared to tourists coming from the old market.
In the future, the outlining and choice of target groups will need even more careful consideration.
Fruitful and good cooperation between neighbouring regions and other tourist destinations in Kainuu will be continued. As the number of tourism-related projects continues to increase, it is even more important to work closely together and be informed on the on-going actions in the international marketing of other Kainuu tourism centres and in projects on international tourism to prevent double measures.
