The food cluster in Southern Ostrobothnia is nationally unique and significant. There is a significant number of parts of the food cluster in the region, but the operation doesn’t work effectively. Participation in the EU's S3 Smart Specialization in Agri-Food platform requires a strong regional organised cluster.
The project of Food Living labs connecting people has the objectives to create a regional permanent innovation cluster, with strong business cooperation as key elements, a user-oriented food cluster for SMEs, under the Living Lab concept and the roadmap for increasing the level of activity.
The permanent activity is aimed with four steps: (1) building a trust zone between industries through living lab environments, (2) verification of the practical functioning of digital technologies in productive environments, (3) a gradual approach to digitalisation of the industry (IoT and Big Data), starting with the investment in digital solutions and data analysis, and (4) adapting the measures to the modernisation of training, by creating programmes that keep both food sciences and information technology.
The implementation of the project consists of influencing and communicating, building a living lab network, identifying technologies and territorial renewal of the operational environment. Strong cooperation with Smart Sensors 4 Agri-Food (leadership technology recnognizing working group) and Consumer Involvement in Agri-Food thematic partnerships are being developed. Participation in ERIAFF Food Systems working Group.
Food Living labs connecting people -hankkeen kohderyhmänä ovat Etelä-Pohjanmaalla toimivat pienet ja keskisuuret elintarvikeyritykset, elintarvikekoneiden valmistajat, logistiikan toimijat ja elintarvikeketjulle palveluja ja panoksia tuottavat yritykset. Kohderyhmänä ovat myös alueen korkeakoulujen ja tutkimuslaitosten toimijat.
Hankkeen välillisiä kohderyhmiä ovat alan kansainväliset verkostot sekä valtakunnalliset ruoka-alan yritykset. Välillisiä hyötyjiä ovat alan opiskelijat, Seinäjoen kaupunki ja Etelä-Pohjanmaan maakunta.

During the Food Living Labs connecting people-project, different measures were taken to promote the unity and networking of food companies operating in the Southern Ostrobothnia region. In the project, a regional business cluster was formed, the goal of which is to create a unified network to represent South Ostrobothnia's Living lab operations and internationally significant regional food operations in international networks. During the project, long-term work was done to connect international networks. As a result of the work, Southern Ostrobothnia was get with the Food Systems working group of the ERIAFF network. The Food System Working Group is a working group under the ERIAFF network. The working group has been established to expand the views of the network and to connect all areas of the food system to each other. The goal of the activity is to guide development work in the field internationally and influence the future of the food industry at the European level, for example politically. South Ostrobothnia benefits from versatile influencing opportunities and contacts, through which development and research work can be promoted in Finland as well. Conference of the ERIAFF Food Systems Working Group will be held in Seinäjoki in 2024.
With the help of an organized unified business cluster, it will be possible in the future to apply for new types of funding and represent South Ostrobothnia regionally throughout Europe, which increases the diversity of cooperation and creates new future prospects for South Ostrobothnia as well. During the project, the Highfive (Horizon Europe) project was launched with the help of networks, one of the areas of operation of which is financing companies' expert services, trips or device removal during the project through the I3-financing instrument. After the completion of the Food Living Labs connects people project, South Ostrobothnia will be left with a permanent business cluster that will be able to utilize regional development and piloting platforms to support its own business.
During the project, the Frami Food Living lab innovation platform was created and the 15-year-old regional food technology strategy of Southern Ostrobothnia was updated. In addition, a manual was prepared for the use of the Frami Food Living Lab innovation platform. The manual describes the operation of the innovation platform and, as an example, how the development work can proceed between the company and the piloting platforms. As part of South Ostrobothnia's food industry technology strategy, the South Ostrobothnia regional food industry development road map for the years 2023–2035 was implemented.
